Every Tradeshow we go to, Merchants Overseas gives away a large tote bag full of informational goodies.  In the past month a a half, we’ve been to The Special Event Show, The Craft & Hobby Show, and The Tucson Bead Show, giving a total of 750 goodie bags away! It is our hope that these bags and everything in them, is reused and worth the hours of stuffing and packing =)

Before……

Well, a wonderful artist named Paulette Adams from the Summerland Cottage Studio snagged a bag from us at CHA, added an Italian cotton paisley swatch from Ralph Lauren, and did an amazing new look that she described as “simple, chic, fun and a super quick sew”.   And we agree!!

After………

We love DIY projects!!

Every year The Tucson Bead Show is the place to be for anyone in the business of making jewelry and other creations involving beads, gems, minerals, etc, from all over the world.  Merchants Overseas had a large exhibit area in the Grand Pavilion where we showcased our amazing collections of Crystallized(TM) – Swarovski Elements while also showcasing our new BEADELLE(TM) line of Pave´ beads, Pave´ clasps, Rhinestone Balls, Rondelles & Squardelles, Crystal Splash, Crystal picture frames, and most importantly the Crystal Buckles!

The BEADELLE(TM) Crystal Buckles are a great product due to their endless creating possibilities.  They are great when used with fabric or ribbon, and are perfect as event decor.  They are currently available in round, oval, rectangle, square, heart, and half circle shapes. We had a great response to the buckles from show goers which was very exciting! Now only available in silver-plating, Merchants plans on extending the line to offer gold plated buckles as well!

Merchants Overseas’ team members also brought with them our new project cards as inspiration to showcase the beautiful jewelry that can be made with the BEADELLE(TM) Pave Beads and Rhinestone Balls, while also mixing in some CRYSTALLIZED(TM) – Swarovski Elements!

Make your own BEADELLE(TM) Crystal Necklace with:

When it comes to making your own necklace, bracelet, napkin ring, etc., they all have one thing in common;  they need closure! Unless you specialize in wire jewelry, securing your piece and adding a clasp will probably require the most effort.  In order to secure your piece, the simplest and most popular method requires:

  • Crimp Beads
  • NeedleNose Pliers
  • Clasp

Steps:

  1. Slide a crimp bead onto the end of your wire
  2. Slide the clasp in next to the crimp bead
  3. Loop the wire back through the crimp
  4. Flatten the crimp into place with your pliers
  5. Trim extra wire

Note! Remember to add a half inch or more to the length of your piece starting out, in order to have enough room to add your closure.

When it comes to choosing a clasp, the three most popular types are the lobster claw clasp, toggle clasp, and magnetic clasp.  Choosing one over the other usually depends on the style and size of your piece, and your personal preferences.

Lobster Claw Clasps tend to be the hardest to use especially when trying to put on a bracelet by yourself.  However they are simple, small, and do not add or take away from your piece.

Toggle Clasps are little bit easier to handle and slightly add to your design without over-powering it.  These specific toggle clasps have a twist detail and are available in gold or silver plating at http://www.merchantsoverseas.com for wholesale or http://www.glitterize.com for small quantities.

Magnetic Jewelry clasps are by far the easier of the three to use.  Basically, a magnetic jewelry clasp includes two parts that are held together by magnetic attraction and released from each other by pulling them apart to break the magnetic attraction. The best part is that these clasps are strong and secure and you do not have to worry about your necklace or bracelet just falling off.

These particular clasps are Beadelle(TM) Pave Magnetic Clasps with Crystals.  They come in gold or silver plating and with multi-colored or colored crystals.  These make great accents to any piece and add to it just as if it were another bead.  These are great as inspiration for a creative designer.  Available at http://www.merchantsoverseas.com for wholesale or http://www.glitterize.com for small quantities.

If you like the look of SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS Flat Backs but are unsure of the best way to apply them, you are not alone!

Since Flat Backs come with or without Hotfix, figuring out which to use depends on what you are applying them to.

Fabric: You can use Flat Backs With Hotfix on all Fabrics except Leather, and Swarovski guarantees they will not fall off! Wash them, Dry Clean them, swim with them, do whatever you want with no worries!

When applying Flat Backs with Hotfix:

Start off by using a “tester” piece of material to practice before attempting to make your final project.  Depending on the material, your heat temperature and applying time may vary.

When applying Flat Backs with Hotfix to fabric, we highly recommend putting a piece of Teflon paper in between your fabric and any other fabric involved, and on top of your Flat Backs design.

You can then use a household iron to heat them (Household irons usually reach 250 – 340 degrees Fahrenheit).  Hold your iron down over the design without movement.  The time you should hold your iron down is usually around 30 seconds, however varies depending on the fabric.

Note: There are specific Hotfix applicator tools and other types of irons available at your local Arts and Crafts store if you do not want to use your household iron.

When applying Flat Backs with No Hotfix:

If you are NOT using fabric for your next creative project, then we recommend using Flat Backs with No Hotfix.  Instead of Hotfix, we recommend using a Two-Part Epoxy Glue/Adhesive to secure your Flat Backs onto other materials like glass, plastic, suede or other metals.
