2010 Vancouver Olympics: Figure Skating Fashion Trends

Posted on: February 16, 2010

The Figure Skating portion of this year’s Winter Olympics has begun and for some, this is a favorite!  It  started out Sunday February 14th with the Pairs Short Program with China coming in 1st, Germany in 2nd, and Russia in 3rd.  Last night we saw the Pairs Free Skate and tonight we look forward to the Men’s Short Program.

With figure skating, it’s all about the tricks, the music, and for most, the beautiful costumes flowing in the wind.  Just like current fashion apparel trends off the ice, sparkle detailing and bling is in.

However, it is even more important to stand out on the ice, and therefore many costumes sparkled all over, including the male skaters!

When it comes to watching the couples skate and their costumes, it is fun to see male and female “versions” of a particular costume.  In reality, most men would not be caught dead in the outfits the male skaters are in, and some might wonder why they wear what they wear.  Is that sparkly chest hair?

However, there are ways to add some crystal sparkle to a male costume without going over the top…

Stay Tuned for the rest of the month’s Figure Skating festivities:

At Merchants Overseas, we work with a number of different costume designers who love to incorporate crystal into their designs for that extra special sparkle.  If you are a designer and are interested in discount wholesale purchases, or are just starting out and need inspiration or application guidance, please send all inquiries to:
